I write a lot of poetry, but can never seem to come up with non-cheesy-sounding tunes to turn the poems into proper songs. Any tips?

Poetry is a completely different art, and attempts at translation are often unsuccessful! It's meant to be read, while lyrics are meant to be heard. So now you've got to worry about intelligibility, emphasis on repetition, etc. I recommend Jason Blume's excellent book "Six Steps to Songwriting Success."
